The Man Behind The Pit
Mark
“Cap”
Pit Fitness & Training
Meet Mark — known to everyone around here as Cap. A man who spent years working toward a dream he kept close to his chest, Cap followed that dream all the way to the Florida Keys, bought a gym, and turned it into exactly the place he always wished existed.
Mark grew up outside Washington DC, where he competed in wrestling, football, and lacrosse — a gym rat long before he knew what to call it. He went on to earn a degree from the University of Virginia and an MBA from Johns Hopkins, then built a successful career in the technology industry. Through all of it, three kids who remain the center of his world. When an early retirement package landed on his desk, Mark did what most people only dream about — he took it, moved his life to Islamorada, and bought a gym. Not by accident. By design.
No corporate feel. No shortcuts. Just iron, community, and a whole lot of soul. The gym is an extension of Cap himself — his standards, his personality, and his belief that showing up day after day is what separates the life you want from the one you settle for.
In the Florida Keys, everyone knows a captain. Around Mile Marker 81, there's only one Cap.
WHY THE PITBULL?
Cap has owned pitbulls his whole adult life. Multiple dogs across multiple decades — each one loyal, goofy, loving, and absolutely misunderstood by people who’d never bothered to know them. That experience made him stubborn on the subject in the way only a pitbull owner can be.
His kids grew up with pitbulls in the house. They learned early that a dog’s reputation is usually someone else’s problem — that what matters is how you raise something, what environment you give it, and whether you show up for it every single day. That lesson has legs far beyond the dog park. It’s the same lesson Cap tries to pass on through the gym: consistency builds character, and character is what you’re actually training.
When it came time to name the gym, there was no real debate. “Pit” is a love letter to the breed. The mascot in the green hat is Cap on four legs — stubborn, loyal, a little rough around the edges, but good down to the core. It’s not just a logo. It’s a self-portrait.
A LITTLE IRISH SPIRIT
Cap doesn’t just carry his Irish heritage in his heart — he wears it on his skin. His body is a canvas of Celtic tattoos, each one a permanent tribute to his roots. When you see him around the gym, you’ll know immediately that this isn’t a passing interest. The Irish pride runs deep, it runs permanent, and it shows up in everything from the shamrocks on the wall to the green in the logo. He wears his Irish pride on his sleeve — literally.
His kids have the same roots. They grew up knowing the proverbs, understanding the pride, and learning that heritage isn’t just where you came from — it’s how you carry yourself going forward. The values he inherited, he’s passing on: show up, work hard, take care of the people around you, and never mistake cutting corners for cleverness.
“Is maith an scáthán súil carad.”
“A friend’s eye is a good mirror.”
— Irish Proverb
He thinks about that proverb a lot when he thinks about the gym. A good training partner, a consistent coach, a community that actually knows you — those things show you who you are more honestly than most mirrors. That’s what he’s building here. Not just a place to lift. A place that holds you to something.
Sláinte.
